DIGI SENS structural measurement technology makes a lot of applications possible which can be individually tailored to our customers' wishes. It is an alternative to the conventional load cell. The main concept is to deduce the weight by measuring the deformation. Two of the advantages of this system are that it has a better price-performance ratio compared to other systems, and that it is very easy to install and to maintain. DIGI SENS is able to develop and deliver complete and proven solutions to customer problems in house under real conditions.

One application example of the structural measurement technology is the built-in sensors in NIDO salt-spreader vehicles. The DIGI SENS sensor is fitted into the structure of the salt tub on the lorry. The deformation enables us to determine the weight of salt in the container. Furthermore, the strew-dosage system can be controlled. The sensors in the salt-spreader vehicles are replaceable without dismantling the structure and have been shown to be extremely robust, so that they resist all weather and road conditions.

With the help of structural measurement technology, a solution was also found for the Bucher Guyer Corporation. The pavement and street sweepers from Bucher Guyer are designed for a weight of 4.5 tons. However, there are regulations which forbid vehicles weighing over 3.5 tons on the pavements. With built-in DIGI SENS sensors, which deduce the total load by measuring the deformation, the driver is alerted whenever this load-limit is exceeded. He can then leave the pavement and use the remaining spare capacity on the road.In this application our customer also derives benefit from the high stability and the simplicity of installation and maintenance of DIGI SENS sensors.




Another application of structural measurement technology is in cable railways. Whenever the load on the cable varies, changes in cable tension are avoided by the use of weights. The DIGI SENS sensor makes sure that this tension compensation works. The system guarantees high security, because it has a selfcheck function. With other passive measuring systems, there is the possibility of transmitting an incorrect signal, which implies a security risk. If the measurement of a DIGI SENS sensor is impaired, no signal will be transmitted, and therefore the situation can be immediately correctly interpreted. Another considerable advantage of the DIGI SENS sensor is that it is not part of the mechanical structure path, so the entire installation remains unaffected if a dysfunction occurs.

As in all DIGI SENS transducers, an oscillatingwire sensor is used to convert the force/load into an electrical signal. This patented element is able to deliver a signal that can be directly processed by a computer. This product is used to monitor the stress on any kind of structure such as bridges, cranes, machines, tanks, overload protection for lifts, platforms, robots, vehicles, etc. The Strain Monitor KL 66 is incorporated into the structure to be monitored and allows a precise and repeatable measurement of stress changes. Using DIGI SENS oscillating-wire technology instead of strain gauges means a simple mechanical mounting combined with a very accurate measurement. This technology also offers an extremely high resolution. Deformations of fractions of μm can be measured. Since the KL 66 is adapted to the material of the structure, differential thermal expansion does not affect the precision. The DIGI SENS technology is also ensures very good long-term stability. Since no organic material is involved in the measurement chain, creeping or other influences are reduced to a minimum. The KL 66 delivers a 5 V TTL frequency signal, proportional to the displacement measured. The frequency is a square root function and in most applications it can be considered linear. This frequency signal is easy to transmit, immune to interference and can be handled directly by any processor. The Strain Monitor KL 66 is delivered with all fixing parts needed. This allows a simple mounting on the desired structure. No special tooling is needed. No surface conditioning, no glues drying in clean room conditions and no maintenance are required. Just tighten the screw and you are ready to measure.
